Alastair Hearsum
He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with First-Class Honours in Drawing and Painting, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction. In 1982, he won the Royal Scottish Academy student Medal for Painting and the Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship, which took him to India for five months, where he documented his trip with a camera. After a brief stint teaching at Edinburgh College of Art, he found himself in the New Scottish Image exhibition at the Fruitmarket Gallery sharing space with Steven Campbell and Adrian Wiszniewski.
His career took a digital turn in 1990, leading to a 33-year adventure in London’s advertising and entertainment industries, where he collected numerous awards, including a D&AD Pencil, a Primetime Emmy for Visual Effects. He was part of Glassworks twice Bafta nominated team for their work on Black Mirror, several British Television Advertising awards for animation and A British Animation Award. In 2019, he “retired” to Portobello, where he now spends his time pointing his camera at things and taking on select animation projects..
